Give glossy plastic casings a brushed finish aluminum plate

Go out and buy a new gadget today and chances are it’s going to have a glossy plastic finish to it. Or at least, some area of the casing will be glossy, smooth plastic. Manufacturers even go so far as to protect the finish by covering it in sheets on plastic you need to remove before first use.

The problem with glossy plastic is it only looks good as you’re taking it out of the packaging. As soon as your fingers touch that surface it picks up greasy marks, then dust starts settling, it gets the odd scratch, and it’s basically ruined.

Snazzy Labs has a solution to this problem. It costs a couple of dollars and if done correctly actually makes your devices look higher quality than the original finish.

As you can see, a few rubs with a scouring pad followed by a wipe with an ammonia-free glass cleaner and you have a brushed finish aluminum plate . The pads cost about $5 for a pack of three and the glass cleaner is around $4-8 for a 32 ounce bottle which will last you a very long time.

If you check out the NeoGAF thread about this, you can see people have used the technique to “improve” upon their games consoles, including the Wii U and Xbox One. It can look great if done correctly, but just be aware there’s no going back. Once you’ve started scouring the surface it will never return to its glossy plastic original.
